Promote separate collection of solid waste, promote the recycling of municipal solid waste, and by the promotion of this activity, awake the awareness of environmental protection and awareness of resource among the citizen of the city. Finally build a society of closed substance cycle in Beijing.

Background

After the first step of separate waste collection is carried out in 1996, more and more small communities began to take part in the trial run on each very small locality. Some of the separate collection waste bins have been put in front of some big shopping centers. All these have drawn great media attention.

How to carry out

Now Beijing will do it in a more systematic way. The first step should be carried out in the embassy area from Dec. 7, 1998, due to the high ratio of recyclable materials in the solid waste collected this area and demands from some of the embassies. The separate collection should be system, including the collection, transportation, recycling and then the marketing of the recovered materials. After the success of the pilot project, Beijing will further promote this way in all over the city, to build a society of closed substance cycle.

Waste Classification

Waste is mainly classified into four types: Paper Products, Plastics, Bottles and Cans, Non-recyclables.

Recyclable Paper: office paper, copy paper, used envelope and letter, newspaper and advertisement paper, wrapping paper, paper board, etc.

Non-recyclable paper: paper napkin, toilet paper, wax paper, oiled paper.

Plastics: plastic bags, polystyrene, foam packaging, packing plastics, foam lunch box, cling-wrap.

Bottles & Cans: wine bottles, aluminum or tin cans, glass, plastic bottles.

Non-recyclables: other domestic wastes( Kitchen waste, dust, non-recyclable papers, etc).

To avoid the harm of the used batteries, separate collection of used batteries will also be carried out on a monthly bases in plastic bags.
