General Information on Solid Waste Situations

The of solid waste generated all over China is enormous not only in terms of amount, but also in terms of types. They have complicated characters and cause serious pollution.

According to statistics, in 1993, the total generation of industrial solid waste ( not including the township enterprises) amounted to 0.62 billion tons. The discharge of solid waste amounted to 20 million tons. Among them 10 million tons is discharged into rivers and seas. Hazardous waste takes 2.44% of the industrial solid waste total. Currently, the storage of the industrial solid waste amounted to 5.92 billion tons, covers 55 hectare of land (include farmland 3700 hectare). The increase of municipal solid waste is by 6% - 7% per year. The cleaning and transport of municipal solid waste in 1993 is 120 million tons, 2/3 of the cities is surrounded by municipal solid waste. For the constraint of the technology, capital, managerial levels, the management of solid waste ( solid waste treatment, solid waste disposal...) is still at a relevantly low level. A lot of them is still under the safety and environmentally compatible level according to the requirement of environmental protection, incident caused by solid waste pollution happened in every year. Take 1990 as an example, there were 103 incidents which cause serious effects and losses. Though the utilization and disposal of solid waste increase every year, the improper storage of industrial solid waste is still enormous and cause pollution to the surrounding waters, air and soil, affect the scenery nearby. The potential of the hazardous and radioactive waste bring a more attention deserving problem.

After the implementation of the municipal solid waste projects, the environmentally compatible treatment of the municipal solid waste will increase 16 million tons per year. The projects will easy the municipal solid waste pollution to the cities and towns, facilitate the move to build clean cities and have obvious environmental effects.

After the implementation of the industrial solid waste disposal and utilization projects, China will utilize and disposal industrial solid waste 40 million tons per year and 400 mu (1mu=0.1644acre) farmland and a large amount of construction material are saved. So, not only good environmental effects and social effects is achieved, the good economic effects is achieved as well. What's more important is that we can control the pollution of the hazardous and radioactive waste more effectively.
